What to do while you wait

• Stay clear of a broken spring or hanging cable. Torsion springs store enormous energy. Even a "broken" spring can release more energy unexpectedly when bumped.
• Don't force the door manually. Trying to lift a door with a broken spring can rip the cables off the drums or bend the tracks — turning a $300 spring repair into a $1,500 rebuild.
• Disconnect the opener if it's running uselessly. Most openers have a red emergency release cord — pull it down and toward the door to disengage the trolley. This prevents the opener from grinding against a stuck door.
• Secure the home if the door is stuck open. Lock the interior door from the garage to the house, move valuables out of sight, and if you have a second vehicle, park it across the opening to discourage anyone walking in.
